OK guys, it is cold! But we have a compromise. The trails are marked. Jason says we can have access to the trails. Let’s do this – NO RACE. BUT – if you would like to skijor the trail, please come to the ski hut between 10:30 and 11:30. Pay Kathleen $10. Get a bib so other trail users know you are out there legitimately. Ski the race route that I marked to your heart’s content (we will not have the extravagant pin flags blocking the other trails, but stay on the marked course with the arrows.) Start at the usual start line on the powerline below the ski hut. Get as cold as you want. Be OFF the trail by 12:15. Turn in your bib. If you are an amazing human being, stick around and help clean up the poop on the trail and pick up the course markers at 12:30. Sound like a plan?
West Ridge Race Sunday Feb 16, 11 am
The annual ASPA skijor race on the UAF West Ridge trails will take place on Sunday, February 16 at 11:00AM. This is a very rare opportunity to skijor on some of the best maintained ski trails in Fairbanks.
This year we will again be offering a “No Whiz” option which is a slightly gentler and shorter course that omits the somewhat daunting Big Whizzy.
Race distances are one mile, a hair over 3 miles (“No Whiz”,) 4.5 miles or 9 miles. Racers can compete in a one, two or three dog class. As always, beginners are welcome and encouraged to participate! Check out the course description. (click on “course description” for the link.)
Registration: 10-10:30AM in the Ski Hut next to the IARC building. Race meeting will be at 10:40AM. Race starts at 11:00AM. No dogs in or around the Ski Hut, please. Stage your teams and park in the lot behind IARC.
Race Fees: $10 if you pre-register by 5:00PM Friday, February 15, $15 on race day. To pre-register, email Kathleen Boyle, kmboyle1720@gmail.com. Half of the entry fees will be donated to the UAF trails club.
If the temperature at the Fairbanks airport is below -15 at 9:00 on race day, the race will be canceled. Please check the club Facebook page or website, www.alaskaskijoring.org for any last minute details.
As always, we need people to help with the race! If you would be willing to time, handle, or help with registration, please let Sara, stabbert@hotmail.com or Kathleen, kmboyle1720@gmail.com know. Our ability to make this race go smoothly depends on having at least two volunteer timers and two dedicated start line handlers. (Not including Sara and Kathleen!)
Please be sure to clean up after your animals so we can continue using this venue in the future. And remember, NO DOGS ON THE UAF TRAILS IN THE WINTER!!
See you all on February 16th!
Thank you!
